Born and raised up in Lusatia/GDR. After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer worked in a theatre and cultural event venue. 1987-93 studies of cultural anthropology, literature and ethnology in Leipzig, 1999 PhD in European ethnology at Humboldt University Berlin.
Has worked for DOK Leipzig and other film festivals in several positions since 1991. 2000-2002 selection for Sheffield Doc/Fest, since 2004 selection and programming for DOK Leipzig, since 2014 head of film programme there. In 2017 after 26 years termination of work in Leipzig.
Since 1998 working for Cottbus FilmFestival as well, head of the German-Sorbian section „Homeland | Domownja | Domizna“. Curated numerous film programmes, e.G. for DOK Leipzig, Acadamy of Arts Berlin, goEast Festival for Central and Eastern European Film Wiesbaden and Goethe Institut around the world. Had teaching assignments at universities and institutes, mentor and tutor in training initiatives. Author and dramaturg for documentaries and documentary serials. Published on documentary.
Has been an author since early youth, first in fine literature (Reinhard Weißbach Award for Literature in 1988), for children and music theatre and since 1991 as a journalist (Michael Jürgen Leisler Kiep Grant for Young Journalists in 1998) for print, online and tv.
Regular film reviews for daily newspaper junge Welt. Consultant for distribution and festival strategies and for a Berlin based management consultancy company. Co-founder of the German-Sorbian Network of Lusatian Filmmakers and of the initiative “Fair Festival Work”. Member of the federal film funding commission BKM. Two sons, lives in Berlin.
